    Nominated for the Academy Award for best documentary feature, My Country, My Country is a close-up record of the January 2005 Iraqi elections, a process that Poitras, operating almost alone, followed in intimate detail for more than half a year.

    Event: “Spotlight on Culture in the Middle East”
    Place: Lee Chapel, 7:30 PM
    Spotlight on Culture in the Middle East -- Davar Ardalan. 7:30 p.m., Lee Chapel. Author Ardalan is Iranian American and has a book titled "My Name is Iran." Co-sponsored by the Fishback Program for Visiting Writers.
    Her name actually is Iran Davar Ardalan. After the hostage crisis she dropped her first name when in the states. Born in the U.S., moved to Iran as an infant, returned to the states as a teenager, she then agreed to return to Iran and an arranged marriage because she wanted to live the Iranian culture. She has worked as a news anchor in Iran, and upon her return to the U.S., ultimately became the producer of NPR's Morning Edition.

    Event: "Exile, Diaspora, Migration: Negotiating Identity for a Cuban-American Author", lecture

    Acclaimed poet, novelist, and essayist Uva de Aragon will be on campus next week and will give a public lecture, entitled "Exile, Diaspora, Migration: Negotiating Identity for a Cuban-American Author".Born in Havana, De Aragon came to the U.S. in 1960.  Since then she has received numerous literary prizes for her works of poetry, such as as Versos de exilio ("Verses of Exile") and Los nombres del amor ("The Names of Love"), as well as her most recent novel Memoria del silencio (The Memory of Silence), among others.

    Come  join us for a screening of Inside Burma: Land Of Fear. Professor Lubin will be giving a short talk before the documentary about the past and ongoing atrocities. After the documentary, Nay Lin, who was born and raised in Burma will answer any questions regarding his personal experience.

    INSIDE BURMA exposes the history and brutality of one of the world's most repressive regimes. It is "A compelling account of the tragedy of recent Burmese history" - News and Reviews, Asian Educational Media Service-Univ. of IL/Champaign.
