How to Get Here

Lexington is situated just off of  Interstate 81 about 200 miles southwest from Washington, D.C.; it is about a three hour drive from Washington to Lexington is served most closely by the Roanoke airport, approximately 50 miles away.  Limousine service is available from the airport to Lexington by contacting Shenandoah Limousine 540-464-5466.  The cost for this service from the Roanoke airport to W&L is $60.00.  There is also direct bus service from Dulles International Airport near Washington, D.C. to Lexington via Greyhound Bus departing several times daily.  Amtrak trains serve Staunton, VA, about 30 miles north of Lexington three days per week..  Limousine service  is also available from Staunton to Lexington . Living Accommodations in Lexington

Temporary housing in not always easy to find in Lexington due to the number of students living off campus in many of the available houses and apartments in the area.  If you are not going to be living in University housing, it is recommended that you seek advice and any assistance available in securing housing from the department with which you will be working as soon as possible.  You can also contact real estate agents in Lexington for assistance.  You can also look in the For Rent section of one of our local newspapers.

Climate

Weather in Lexington is temperate with significant variation between the seasons. During the winter months of  January and February, temperatures can on occasion drop as low as 0 degrees Fahrenheit while in the summer during July and August they may occasionally reach as high as 100 degrees.  Apart from these extremes, however, the climate is among the most pleasant in the U.S., with extended and very pleasant springs and autumns and ample opportunity to enjoy the particular beauty of each of the four seasons.  Rainfall averages about 40 inches per year.  

Shopping in Lexington

Lexington is served by several major grocery stores, the closest of which to the W&L campus and the downtown area is Kroger located on Nelson St. about half a mile from the center of Lexington and W&L.  Other grocery stores are found in the shopping centers on the edges of town.  This is also where you will find discount department stores such as K-Mart and WalMart where most necessary household items can be found. There are several pharmacies and book and music stores in and around Lexington, both men's and women's clothing stores, and sporting stores as well.  Many local residents also travel to Roanoke or Charlottesville, each about an hour away by car, to do shopping at the many stores located in  the larger malls there.

Laundry Facilities in Lexington

There are both self-serve laundromats and drop-off cleaners in downtown Lexington within easy walking distance of the campus and central town area.  The average cost for the self service laundromats is approximately $3.00-$4.00 per load of clothing to wash and dry it.
