Events at W&L:
-
- A talk on "The On-Going Preservation
and Protection of the UNESCO World Heritage
Site at Hampi (Vijayanagar)," will be
held on Thurs, Nov. 8 at 4 PM at the Center
for International Education, followed by a
reception. The speaker will be Dr. M.S.
Nagaraja Rao, former Director General of the
Archaeological Survey of India. Dr. Rao has
also served as an advisor to UNESCO on
numerous issues and sites, including the
World Heritage Site at Angkor in Cambodia.
Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagar
empire of southern India and at its heyday
in the 14th and 15th centuries was one of
the richest cities in the world. Today it is
a vast area of temple, palace, and urban
ruins, parts of which are still inhabited by
local residents, all set in a magnificent
landscape of boulder strewn mountains and
valleys. Dr. Rao has been a vocal opponent
of the forcible removal of these
contemporary inhabitants, urging instead a
judicious and mutually beneficial
co-existence between local populations and
preservation sites. He will speak on this
and on on-going work at Hampi as well as
sharing stories from his long career as an
archaeologist
