W&L in Rome 2006

note:  the W&L - John Cabot program is not running for Fall 2007 due to insufficient student interest.  Please use the Fall '06 prices and information as a guide only.  If you are applying to study at John Cabot for Winter/Spring 2008, please visit the Center for International Education in September to learn if the W&L program will be running or not.

I am in Rome! Oft as the morning ray

Visits these eyes, waking at once I cry,

Whence this excess of joy? What has befallen me?

And from within a thrilling voice replies,

Thou art in Rome! A thousand busy thoughts

Rush on my mind, a thousand images;

And I spring up as girt to run a race!

Samuel Rogers

English poet (1763 - 1855)

John Cabot University

For more information on JCU visit the John Cabot website.

Located in the picturesque Trastevere quarter just down the river from St. Peter’s and the Vatican, John Cabot University is housed in an ex-convent that consists of a central main building of three floors and an adjacent wing connected by terraces and courtyards. The original separate chapel is now the Student Lounge. The property offers students a tranquil atmosphere in which to study and interact, while historic, bustling Rome is just a few steps away. Surrounded by the green gardens of the Accademia dei Lincei (Galileo was an early member) and next door to the Villa Farnesina of Raphael’s famous frescoes, the University is buttressed by the Aurelian wall of the Roman Empire. JCU is accredited in the U.S. by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association

Rome has long been a center for scholars and students in the humanities; its history and literature and its wealth of monuments, archaeological and historical sites, churches, palaces, and galleries dating from ancient times to the modern period offer a resource of almost unlimited scope to the student. It has also of course been an important center of European business and politics -- for milennia! The curriculum at JCU is diverse with a business program distinguished by its international emphasis, an international affairs program developed to provide students with an opportunity to understand contemporary global problems and issues, courses in political science which focus on the theoretical and methodological aspects of the study of politics. There is also a good selection of courses in art history, literature, the humanities, and Italian studies. All courses at John Cabot are offered in English, though W&L students are required to be studying Italian at an appropriate level while enrolled at Cabot. Generally, courses carry three units of credit. The academic year is divided into two semesters of fifteen weeks each, beginning in September and January. In one semester, a student normally enrolls in five courses, earning 15 credits in the semester.

Students are housed in apartments, some in the Trastevere area and others spread throughout the center of Rome, making for genuine participation in the cultural and social life of the Romans.

The Program

The W&L in Rome Program takes full advantage of John Cabot University’s unique position and academic facilities in Rome. While JCU’s curriculum and campus form the focus of the program, W&L also offers a special orientation to acquaint our students with the character and flavor of Italian life prior to the beginning of the semester. The program spends several days in an Umbrian hilltown, where students participate in an intensive Italian language and culture mini-course while also exploring the surrounding countryside and villages. Once in Rome, students will have several days to orient themselves to the city under the tutelage of a W&L faculty member familiar with this remarkable city.

Once the semester is under way, W&L will have a designated program liaison in Rome for the duration of the term, to whom students can turn for extra assistance and guidance beyond that normally offered by JCU’s student services division. Students will get together for a group dinner several weeks into the term, giving them a chance to compare notes on their life in Rome, but beyond that will study at JCU independently.

The comprehensive program fee is *$15587.50 for Fall 2006; it will  include tuition, fees, and accommodation at JCU, the W&L study-abroad fee, and a one week pre-orientation program.   All W&L students meeting normal study abroad requirements are eligible to apply, regardless of major.  Submit the standard Application for Degree Credit for Off-Campus Study, specifying John Cabot as your destination.  Once your application has been accepted you will need to submit the JCU application to the Center for International Education.  Please follow the link to download the application at: www.johncabot.edu/pdf/appl_pack05.pdf   If you have questions, please consult with the Center for International Education.
