As anyone knows who has traveled abroad, it is an experience framed by sights, sounds, smells, and tastes. Of these, it is often only the sights which are easy to bring back and share, but even then, usually only in pale reflections of what the actual impact of that visionary moment was like. But we have asked our study abroad students to try to share something of this perspective experience with us upon their return through the best means possible - their photos. To highlight this, we inaugurated the W&L Study Abroad Photo Contest in Fall 2001. Many students study, work and travel abroad as part of their academic career at Washington and Lee University. The Study Abroad Photo Exhibit is an opportunity for these students to share their experiences with the Washington and Lee community. Rarely do students who have studied abroad have the opportunity to share their experiences and express the changes in themselves. Often, the impact of studying abroad is difficult to put into words, but "pictures are worth a thousand words." Any current student who has studied abroad while enrolled at Washington and Lee University is eligible to submit photos to the exhibit. All members of the Washington and Lee University community are encouraged to cast a vote for their favorite photo. Votes are tallied and prizes awarded to those with the greatest number of votes. Congratulations to all of our participants! View some of the past photos!
The Center for International Education supports the mission and commitment of the University in promoting an educational environment in which students, faculty and staff can become ever more involved with and aware of the global forces, people and perspectives which shape our lives. Whether in the classroom or outside of it, opportunities to learn more about the world abound.
